Setting Goals

Setting goals is important in all aspects of our lives.

Here are some examples :

1 In our personal lives may people are looking to lose weight.

If this is the case, it is important to have a goal as to how much weight we want to lose.

It is also important to have a timescale, which will help us to establish how much we need to lose every week/month.

2 For sports people, setting goals is fundamentally important if they want to become the best in their field. One good example is Duncan Goodhew, who is a former swimmer. At the Olympics he did not win the gold medal, but he had the burning ambition to do so.

As the Olympics are held every 4 years, he had plenty of time to realise his ambition.

He calculated he needed to improve his time by one hundredth of a second every day.

He put the plan into place and duly one the Olympic gold medal. There are some very important points to observe here, one of which is that he broke his goal down into bite sized chunks.

3 In business, if you ask any successful business person the reasons for their success, they will tell you that setting goals was a major factor.

Questions about goals

These are just a few examples, and you may have your own experiences. If we accept that goal setting is important, then a number of questions are relevant:

1 Why don’t more people set goals?

2 How do we set goals?

3 Once the goal has been set how do we reach the goal?

Let’s just briefly cover these questions :

Why don’t more people set goals?

There are a number of reasons including:

Fear of failure-this applies to so many people, who stay within their comfort zone.

People don’t know how to set goals.

Once the goal is set, they don’t know how to achieve the goal.

How do we set goals ?

The goal needs to be specific.

For example : “I want to lose weight.” is not specific.

However,I want to lose 7 pounds by 31st August this year is specific.

Once the goal has been set,how do we reach the goal ?

In order to achieve the goal we must have a detailed action plan.

I am a big believer in goal setting. One thing you didn’t say in the post that I find key to goal setting is the goal should be attainable and be able to be measured. You will continue to work toward a goal if you get the endorfin rush of achievement. The goal should work with your life style.

I’ve written about goal setting on my blog a few times. See the post “Baby Steps,” and more recently, “Write everyday.” I write about goal setting as a way to change habits. Let me know what you think.

Great article. I have been meaning to write a post about goal setting since like a month, and it is still sitting in its first draft.
I need some serious self analysis… And set clear goals myself!
